Unfortunately, in too many classrooms, making notes involves little more than copying what the teacher writes or says. We call this note taking. Notemaking is something else entirely. It is an active process that requires students to identify important details, analyze big ideas, raise questions, note personal reactions and feelings, and make connections to their prior knowledge and experiences. This video is designed to be used with the Thoughtful Classroom Portfolio From Note Taking to Notemaking: How Making Notes and Summarizing Strengthen Student Learning. Dr. Harvey Silver, founder of The Thoughtful Classroom, will guide you through four learning sessions that will help you raise achievement by teaching students the skills of successful Notemaking and summarizing. • Session One focuses on the difference between note taking and Notemaking, explains the research and principles behind Notemaking, and shows you a Notemaking lesson from a real classroom. • In Session Two, you’ll learn a set of research-based Notemaking tools and design a Notemaking lesson for your classroom. • In Session Three, you’ll refine your learning by reflecting on how your lesson worked in your classroom. • Session Four models a process for analyzing student work and using student work to improve instructional decision making. Throughout the video, you’ll view teachers implementing Notemaking lessons in their classrooms. There will also be activity breaks to help you process new content, reflect on your practices, and plan Notemaking lessons for your classroom.
