1. WHAT DOES THE LSIS MEASURE?

2. HOW DO I ADMINISTER THE LSIS?

There are a few simple things to keep in mind when administering the LSIS:

  • There are no right or wrong answers on the LSIS. The LSIS is not a test, so students should be encouraged to inquire about anything on the inventory they do not understand.
  • Please have your students use a # 2 pencil when filling out the LSIS.
  • Make sure your students fully understand the directions for fill out the items on the inventory before they begin.

For more detailed information on administering the LSIS, please download our free LSIS User’s Guide by clicking here.

3. CAN I USE THE LSIS WITH MY ELEMENTARY STUDENTS?

The LSIS was designed and written for students ages 10 and up. Depending on the reading comprehension level of your student the LSIS can be used with children under age 10, but we do not recommend it. We have found that many elementary students (grades 4 and below) will have trouble reading and understanding some of the items in the LSIS. Very young students may also have trouble identifying their preferences with respect to learning.

Thoughtful Education Press does offer a separate Learning Style Inventory for Elementary Students. For pricing in formation and a more detailed description of that inventory, please click here [insert link toe LSIE from online catalog].

7. HAS THE LSIS BEEN STATISTICALLY VALIDATED?

In 2001 the LSIS was independently validated and normed by Emeritus Professor Peter Abrahms, Ph.D., of the Department of Instruction Technology, Research, and Assessment at Northern Illinois University. The sample used in the statistical analysis was comprised of 1,406 students from two U.S. states. Of the 1,406 students, 50.1% were male and 49.9% were female with ages ranging from 9 to 21 years.

Reliability data was collected on the LSIS in two distinct ways. First, an item analysis was conducted which correlated each item of a given learning style with the total score for that learning style. This was done for each of the four learning styles measured, as well as for the items measuring introversion and extroversion. Second, a split half reliability analysis was conducted by comparing participants’ responses to the items from the first half of the instrument with their responses to the second half items. Each analysis yielded positive correlations indicating a high level of reliability for a learning style inventory.

A copy of the complete research report will be available for download soon.

8. WHAT IS FORCED RANKING AND IS IT THAT IMPORTANT?

Forced ranking is the method we ask students to use to fill out the items in the LSIS. It is VERY important that student force rank each of the items in a given question. Any question that is not force ranked will be labeled blank by our scoring program and will not be included in the total score for that student’s learning style and attitude.

Here is a sample of some questions from the LSIS that are forced ranked correctly: Click here.

Here is a sample of some question from the LSIS that have been filled out incorrectly: Click here.

13. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I ADMINISTER THE LSIS TO MY STUDENTS?

As often as you’d like. A student’s learning style is not set in stone. There are many factors that contribute to a student’s preferred style of learning and those preferences can, and often do, shift. If you are using the LSIS to bring a greater diversity to your teaching methods, then it may behoove you to have your students take the inventory twice a year to see how their preference are changing based on your teaching methods.
